Baseball Falls to Belmont Abbey in Extra Innings
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians fell to visiting Belmont Abbey in 11 innings on Wednesday evening at Newman Park. The Crusaders scored two in the top of the 11th to win 7-5, causing Catawba to drop to a 1-8 record. Belmont Abbey improved to 7-2.
Belmont Abbey scored two in the top of the first on a two-run homerun. The Crusaders scored again in the top of the fourth, but the Indians responded with three runs of their own. Joe Butts
led off the bottom half of the inning with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Smith singled up the middle to score Butts. Lee Poteat
was walked and Zach Queen
followed with a double to score both Smith and Poteat to tie the game at 3.
Belmont Abbey scored one earned and one unearned run in the top of the fifth to take back the lead. Doubles by Luke Setzer
and Chance Bowden posted a run for the Indians in the bottom of the fifth. Jacob Nester
laid down a bunt for a base hit to advance Cameron Morrison
to second after he was walked. Setzer drew a two-out walk to load the bases. A single by Butts scored Morrison and tied the game at five in the bottom of the sixth.
After the game was tied at five, both the Indians and the Crusaders went without scoring through the tenth inning. Belmont Abbey scored two in the top of the eleventh and held Catawba to only one hit in the bottom to take the win in extra innings.
Butts, Smith, Poteat, and Nester all recorded two hits for Catawba. Queen had two runs batted in while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Colin Rosenbaum led Belmont Abbey’s offense with four hits.
The Indians will return to Newman Park on Saturday as the host a three game series against Shippensburg. Game one of the Saturday double header will begin at 2 pm.
