Catawba Trades Wins With Shippensburg
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba traded wins for a doubleheader with Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba lost the opener 3-4 while getting the split with an 8-4 win in game two. Catawba stands at 4-4 on the season, while Shippensburg are 3-2.
Catawba would start the hits off in the bottom of the first inning. Lead off Carlee Brawley would start woff by getting on with a walk. Taylor Martin would follow with a double to left center scoring Brawley. Martin would advance to third on a dropped third strike. Jordan Dean would single to left field allowing Martin to score. Ending the first inning 2-0.
No runs would be scored again until the Lady Indians came up to bat again in the fifth inning. Brawley would hit a single to get on base with one out. Martin would follow with a double scoring Brawley for a 3-0 lead.
Shippensburg would rally in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Bailey Haines would reach first base with an error made by the third basemen and would receive Nicole McCleary as a pinch runner. Mcleary would steal second base to be in scoring position. After yet another out and runners on second and first Chloe Collins would hit a home run allowing three runs to score. The sixth inning would end 3-3.
The game would go into overtime in the eighth inning. With two out on the board and the overtime runner on second Tara Bicko singled to left field and Kendall Geis would score the winning run.
The Lady Indians be the first to put runs on the board with a scatter of three hits and a 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Katelyn Jones would start off the inning with a walk. Sydney Goertzen would follow with a single and then advance to second on a throw which would allow Jones to score. Goertzen would then steal third base for optimal scoring positon. Brawley would single to the pitcher and then take second base as well as. Allie Baker would then single. Dean would reach first on an error made by the catcher allowing Baker to advance to third and Brawley and Goertzen to score unearned runs. Grace Holland would ground out to the short stop for a RBI. Catawba would end the third inning 4-0.
Shippensburg would come back in the top of the forth with a walk from Meghan Klee followed by another walk from Courtney Coy. Maddie Muhall would single to center field allowing Klee to score for a 4-1 ball game.
Catawba would answer immediately in the bottom of the fourth with Brawley single to left field with one out. Baker would walk to gain two runners on base. Martin would RBI to center allowing Brawley to score and Baker to advance to second. Dean would then hit a homerun for a total of three more runs added to the score board. The fourth inning would end 8-1 in Catawba’s favor.
Shippensburg would follow with two more hits and 3 runs in the top of the fifth. The score would be 8-4 ending the top of the fifth before weather made officials call the game early.
Collins would take the loss for Shippensburg pitching two innings. She scattered three hits over the two innings. Madison Hunter would take the win in relief, pitching three innings and striking out two bathers during her three hitless innings. Walser grabbed the save by recording the final strike out.
Catawba will host Barton Sunday for a noon doubleheader.
