Softball Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep of Barton

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba dominated a softball doubleheader with Barton on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba would run rule the Bulldogs in both games after the fifth inning with a score of 11-3 in game one and 11-0 in game two. Catawba stands at 6-4 on the season, while Barton is 1-5.

Game 1:
Barton scored in the first inning of the opener on a two-out single by Brittany Jacobs. That lead didn't last through the first inning as Catawba plated five in its first at bat. Carlee Brawley got things started as she singled on the first pitch she saw. Three of the next four batters walked to force in a run and Monica Taylor gave the Lady Indians a lead on sacrifice fly. With two outs, Grace Holland doubled home two runs and Leah Huggins tripled to make it 5-1.

The Lady Indians would claim two more runs in the bottom of the second. Brawley was hit by pitch. Allie Baker had a bunt single that got Brawley to third where she scored on a wild pitch. Taylor Martin added a sacrifice fly. Barton picked up two runs fourth to close within 7-3. Hayley Grizzle doubled a run home and scored when Sierra Hearp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Catawba ended the game in the fifth as it scored four times to grab the eight-run lead. Kaylee Cook would start things off with a double to left center then three walked followed with one to Martin that forced in a run. Dean ended the game as she cleared the bases with a three-run double. Cook had two hits in the win, while Brawley and Baker scored three times. Madison Hunter (3-0) tossed three and a third innings for the win. She allowed the three runs on just three hits, but did walk six with one strikeout.

Game 2:
Catawba sent a dozen batters to plate in the first inning, plating eight runs and taking total control. Delane Smith singled home the first two and Cook later added a two-run triple. That was plenty of support for Brooke Walser, who improved to 2-3 with the six-hit shutout. She walked none and fanned four.

After the big inning, Catawba added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Holland and two more in the fourth. In that frame, Dean doubled home a run and Maddie Bell collected a RBI single. Dean had three hits and scored three times. Smith had two hits. Grizzle had two of the hits for Barton.

Catawba will host USC Aiken Saturday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
