Men's Lacrosse Soars Over Chowan
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled to a 27-12 victory over visiting Chowan in men’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win moves the Catawba Indians to 1-2 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 2-2.
After a first quarter that saw Catawba trailing 4-1, the Indians surged ahead with a big second quarter that gave the hosts an 11-5 lead at the break. Catawba increased the edge to 20-8 after three quarters.
Nick LaVoy and Anthony Alfonso each scored twice in the opening quarter for Chowan in grabbing the early lead. Catawba dominated the last half of the second quarter with an 8-goal run over the final nine minutes. Joe Barber, Dalton Cook and Cole Fanzo each scored twice in the run.
Catawba would put home the first five goals of the second half marking a stretch of 13 straight goals to go up 16-5. It was 27-9 before three late goals by Chowan accounted for the final margin.
Fanzo tallied six goals and handed out an assist for Catawba. Barber notched three goals with three helpers. Cook, Robert Morrison and Justin Warnock each contributed three goals and an assist. Connor Eakes won 19 of his 26 face-offs and scooped up 15 ground balls.
Catawba dominated statistically, outshooting Chowan 56-30 and holding a 45-27 edge in ground balls. The Indians won 28 of the 42 face-offs.
LaVoy put in six goals for Chowan and picked up a pair of assists. Alfonso finished with three goals and an assist.
Catawba is home again on Sunday as the Indians take on Florida Southern at 1 pm.
