Geiger Makes 24 Saves in OT Loss to Florida Southern
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Visiting Florida Southern edged Catawba 14-13 in overtime in a back-and-forth men’s lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Mocs improve to 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-3.
The Mocs tied the game with 3:38 to go on a goal from Carson Wallace then won it with 44 seconds left in the first overtime period on a man-up goal by Lucas Claude.
Florida Southern scored the game’s first four goals and led 5-2 after a quarter. Catawba battled back with three straight goal to tie the game early in the second. Chase Scott and Joe Barber notched man-up goals with Scott adding another goal to pull the Indians even at the 10:32 mark of the second.
Once Catawba closed the gap to 5-4, the teams were never separated by more than a single goal the rest of the game. The Indians took their first lead with 3:58 to go in the first half on a goal by Robert Morrison. That 7-6 lead held until the break.
Catawba took one-goal leads four times before the Mocs scored twice to go up 12-11 with 9:44 left. The Indians answered with two goals as Morrison tied it and Justin Warnock put Catawba on top 13-12 with 3:57 remaining. The Mocs won the face-off and pulled even on Wallace’s goal just 19 seconds later. Catawba had a man-up advantage early in overtime, but could not score.
Barber had three goals and three assists for the Indians. Morrison added three goals with one assist. Scott and Warnock each had two goals. Florida Southern outshot Catawba 57-39, but Indian goalie Kevin Geiger kept the game close with a career-high 24 saves.
Claude picked up three goals for Florida Southern. Wallace also had three goals and added an assist. Kevin Dyer and Kyle Silverstein each had two goals and two assists. Mike Greco stopped eight shots in goal for the Mocs.
Catawba returns to action next Sunday, hosting Florida Tech at 1 pm.
