Baseball Splits SAC Double Header Against Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians split a double header against visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Saturday in Newman Park. Catawba took game one 6-5 and lost game two 0-5. The split makes the Indians’ record 8-11 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Bear’s record moves to 15-7 and 4-2 in the SAC.
Clay Young picked up his second win of the season after pitching two innings in relief during game one. He had four strike outs and allowed just one hit with no walks. Connor Johnson earned his first save of the year, allowing one run on one hit over two innings.
Lenoir-Rhyne took the first lead and posted three runs on the board in the top of the third inning. The Bears added another run in the fifth before the Indians could put a run up. Catawba recorded two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take the 5-4 lead. The Indians tallied one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave up just one run in the eighth. Catawba held Lenoir-Rhyne with a three-up, three-down ninth to finish the game on top.
Michael Elwell took the loss in game two after pitching five innings and two earned runs. John Grigg pitched a complete game for Lenoir-Rhyne, holding the Indians to just five hits and no runs.
Setzer went 2-for-3 in game two with a double. Kyle Smith, Joe Butts
, and Mitchem had the remaining hits for Catawba.
The Indians will travel to Tampa, FL to play two non-conference games on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Carson-Newman for another SAC series.
