Men's Lacrosse Tops Florida Tech
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba knocked off visiting Florida Tech 15-7 in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Catawba Indians improve to 2-3, while the Panthers fall to 1-4.
Chase Scott, Cole Fanzo and Dalton Cook all had three goals for Catawba. Cook added three assists, while Scott and Fanzo each handed out one assist. Kevin Geiger recorded 17 saves in goal for the Indians. Keenan D’Arcy caused four turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, wile Connor Eakes won 15 of his 22 face-offs.
Catawba closed the first quarter with three straight goals to lead 4-1 after 15 minutes. Florida Tech scored the lone goal of the second quarter, midway through the period to make it 4-2 at the half.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter with Cook starting the see-saw with his tally two minutes into the second half. Scott had two goals with Carson Clough getting two for Florida Tech as the team headed to the final quarter with Catawba up 7-5.
Catawba pulled away in the final 15 minutes. Cook, Scott and Joe Barber put in goal in the first 2:15 of the period as the Indians moved out to a 10-5 edge. After a Florida Tech goal from Addison Abramson, the Indians reeled off four more to take command. Fanzo had two of the goals over that stretch that made it 14-6.
Florida Tech held a 40-35 edge in shots, but Catawba had a 43-27 advantage in ground balls and won 16 of the 25 face-offs.
Clough led the Panthers with three goals. David Welsh caused six turnovers and Daniel Flock recorded 11 saves in goal.
Catawba opens conference play on Saturday as the Indians host Newberry at 1 pm.
