Softball Splits Doubleheader With Limestone
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Catawba battled Limestone to a doubleheader split in softball action on Sunday afternoon at Babe Ruth Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 8-1 with the Saints taking game two 2-1. Catawba moves to 10-8 on the year with Saints now 13-8.
The Lady Indians connected on four home runs, two by winning pitcher Preston Ellenberg, in the victory. Carlee Brawley led off the game with homer and Leah Huggins adding a two-run shot in the fifth. Ellenberg led off the sixth with her first round tripper then added a two-run homer in the seventh. Delane Smith had two hits and drove in two.
Ellenberg upped her pitching mark to 2-0 without allowing a run. She tossed five scoreless frames then reentered in the sixth after four straight runners reach which plated the lone Limestone run. Over her seven innings, Ellenberg scattered five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Catawba outhit Limestone in game two, but managed only one run. Brawley led off with a single and scored on a double by Smith. The Lady Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but failed to score which started a stretch where 15 of the final 17 batters were retired.
Lindsey Mason’s two-out double tied the game for Limestone in the first. Emma Swearingen, who had two hits for the Saints in the opener, brought home the winning run on a squeeze bunt in the third. Ashley Parnell had three hits in game two and scored the winning run.
Courtney Smith (8-2) picked up the win in relief for the Saints. She allowed just three baserunners over five shutout innings. Smith gave up two hits and struck out two. Madison Hunter (5-1) suffered her first loss, allowing two runs off five hits with four strikeouts over six innings.
Catawba is set to host King on Tuesday at 1 pm.
