Nixon, Hubbard garner SAC Football Player of Week honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The South Atlantic Conference has announced its Football Players of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18, 2003. Earning honors this week are Catawba offensive lineman Joe Nixon, Catawba defensive lineman Khanis Hubbard and Carson-Newman kicker Angel Gonzalez. Nixon, a 6-2, 305, senior right tackle from Clayton, NC, graded out at 84 percent in the Indians' 35-14 win at Wingate. The former Clayton High School standout was credited with 20 knockdown blocks in the victory and did not allow a sack. Catawba ran for 227 yards on the day, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and added another 185 yards in the air. Hubbard, a 6-3, 250, senior from Raleigh, NC, was in on five tackles as the 10th-ranked Indians earned a 35-14 win at Wingate. The former Enloe High School product was in on a pair of sacks totaling 18 yards in losses as the Tribe defense held the Bulldogs to just 253 yards of offense. Wingate ran for just 47 yards and completed only 13 of 37 pass attempts. Gonzalez (Miami, FL), a 5-11, 160, senior, nailed a game-winning 18-yard field goal with eight seconds to play as the third-ranked Eagles defeated Presbyterian 24-21. Gonzalez was perfect on three field goal tries on the day as he also connected from 23 and 19 yards out. He also made his only point- after try.
