Offense Struggles in Loss to Tusculum
SALIBSURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians were held to just four hits in the opening game of the South Atlantic Conference baseball series against visiting Tusculum in Newman Park on Friday evening. Catawba fell 10-1 to the Pioneers dropping to 11-156 overall and 6-4 in the SAC. Tusculum improves to 12-11 and 6-4 in the conference.
Heath Mitchem went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored the lone run for the Indians. Kyle Smith and Chance Bowden added the other two Catawba hits.
Tusculum scored the first run in the top of the third inning. The Indians looked to strike back, but stranded three runners on base in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pioneers continued scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Catawba had base runners in scoring position but were unable to plate a run.
After a four run half inning for Tusculum in the ninth, Mitchem tallied a run for the Indians. He reached first on a single to left center, advanced to third and crossed home plate on two passed balls.
Catawba continues the series against Tusculum on Saturday with a double header beginning at 1 pm in Newman Park.
