Tilley's Last-Minute Goal Gets Women's Lacrosse Past Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Freshman Brooklyn Tilley scored on a free-position shot with 45 seconds left to lift visiting Catawba to a 12-11 win over Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at Gill Field. The Catawba Indians move to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-8 and 1-2.
Catawba had taken a 9-5 lead early in the second half, but the Bulldogs would eventually tie the game at 10-10 on a goal from Morgan Akers with 12:43 remaining. Katie Barth put the Lady Indians back up with 7:46 to go with Wingate tying it once again on a tally from Nino Cifolilli at the 4:19 mark.
The Lady Indians won the ensuing draw control, but Tilley missed on a free-position try with three minutes to go. Wingate had their own free-position attempt with 1:37 left, but Hannah Scott caused a turnover.
Tilley drew a foul for a free-position attempt and was fouled again on her first try before netting the game-winner. Scott won the draw control for Catawba after Tilley’s goal and the Lady Indians were able to run out the clock.
Catawba got four goals from Tilley, while Barth added two goals and an assist. Gianna Pezzulo scored a goal and assisted on three. Madison Anslemo posted 10 saves, including three after Wingate had tied the game at 10 before Barth’s goal to put the Lady Indians back on top.
Kendall Wells scored three goals with two assists for Wingate. Akers also scored three goals. Emily Keltron added two goals with Ellie Gottschalk assisting on two. Marly Blycher entered in goal for Wingate for the final 24 minutes and made eight saves.
Catawba travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday for a noon contest.
