Setzer Records 11th Double and 12th Homer in Series Opener at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians defeated host Mars Hill 11-5 in game one of the South Atlantic Conference baseball series on Sunday. Catawba improved their record to 14-16 and 9-4 in the SAC, while Mars Hill falls to 7-18 overall and 3-10 in the conference.
Clay Young got the win for the Indians, improving his record to 4-3. Young allowed no runs on two hits, striking out two over 1.2 innings pitched. Sawyer Strickland
earned his first career save, pitching three complete innings and allowing just one run on two hits and striking out four.
Chance Bowden and Heath Mitchem
each tallied three hits for the Indians. Luke Setzer
recorded his 11th double and 12th homerun of the season. Josh Hall led the Lions offense with three hits.
Mitchem reached base on an error, scoring Setzer and Bowden in the opening half inning. Vitello homered for the Lions in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1. Both teams were scoreless over the second and third innings.
scored in the fourth to put another run on the board for the Indians. Mars Hill added an unearned run in the fourth on a failed pickoff attempt. Setzer homered to left center to begin the fifth inning. The Lions plated two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4.
The Indians outscored Mars Hill 7-1 over the remaining four innings, scoring five in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Catawba and Mars Hill will complete the series with a double header on Monday beginning at noon.
