Softball Sweeps Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba swept visiting Mars Hill in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Monday afternoon. The Lady Indians took game one 4-3 and shutout the Lions 7-0 in game two. The Lady Indians are now 16-15 on the year and 4-2 in conference, while the Lions are 10-10 overall and 1-5 in conference.
Catawba would come out strong in the first inning scoring two of their three runs. Delane Smith would double to right center scoring in Allie Baker and Leah Huggins. Mars Hill would answer in the second to gain the lead by scoring all three of their runs. With bases loaded Ragan Broome would walk to score Ashley Evans. Jordan Harris would score on a failed pickoff attempt resulting in a throwing error made by the catcher. The Lady Indians shortstop had a fielding error which scored Hollie Norris for the third run.
Catawba would take back the lead by plating another two runs amongst the fifth and sixth inning. Smith would single to centerfield scoring Baker in the fifth. Taylor Martin would single to right field in the sixth to score Sydney Goertzen for the winning run.
The Lady Indians would come back in game two for a shutout win of 7-0. They started their scoring in the second inning with Sierrah McCarthy hitting a triple to left field scoring Jordan Dean and Monica Taylor. Beth Ann Martin would single to right field scoring Taylor Martin.
Catawba would pick up a run in the third with Monica Taylor scoring on a throwing error made by the catcher. Catawba's other three runs would be earned in the fourth. Delane Smith would hit a home run scoring Carlee Brawley and Baker.
Each team would match with a total of two errors in the second game. Preston Ellenberg would take the win for Catawba improving to 5-2 and only giving up three hits the entire game. She walked none and struck out eight. Christiana Marasa would take the loss for the Lions falling to 4-6 giving up four hits and four runs in three innings. Ashley Collins and Brittany Duncan would also pitch for the lions for the first three innings giving up an additional four hits combined.
Catawba host Queens on Tuesday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
