SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba capped its 2018 spring practice with a Spring Game on Saturday at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Indians used the game as a practice with several scrimmage sessions.

The first scrimmage session had the offense begin at their own five-yard-line. On the first possession, Reid Carlton hit a big pass play to Gavin Rose that covered 51 yards. The defense forced a three-and-out on the next series with Cedric Gervin breaking up a pass on third down.

Ken Avent quarterbacked the next two drives for the Indians. He had a 13-yard first-down pass to Jourdan Osinskie on the first drive and had a 20-yard pass to Joseph Dress on the second drive.

In the drive series that started at their own 30. Kenyatta Greene had a 24-yard run in the first series. Isaiah Huffin followed with a sack and LJ Melvin a tackle for loss to stop the drive. Chris Thompson had a stop for a loss in series two before Avent connected on a 32-yard pass to Dress.

Carlton his Osinskie for 18 yards in the third drive with Avent connecting with Zac Waters for 31 yards in the fourth drive. During that fourth series, Julian Williams had a pass break up and Omar Staley a sack. Cameron Davis recorded a sack during the fifth and final series.

The first red zone series that began on the 25 ended with a 36-yard field goal by Lee Brackman. Carlton had a seven-yard pass to Rose. That came after a tackle for loss by Jordan Hemingway and a caused fumble by Melvin that the offense recovered.

Avent had completions to Dre Dunbar (6 yds) and Demonte Good (16 yds) in drive two, but a tackle for loss by Casey Hull and a sack by Steven Thurston kept the offense off the scoreboard. Huffin had a tackle for loss and a sack to halt the offense in drive three.

Avent produced a touchdown in drive four as he tossed a 21-yard pass to Dress. Carlton completed a 23-yard pass to Osinskie in the final drive, but a Melvin tackle for loss and a penalty pushed the offense back. Carlton got 15 yards back on a pass to Rose, but no points were scored.

The scrimmage ended with a two-minute drill. In the first drive, Carlton hit Will Sweeper for nine yards on the first play then connected with Osinskie for a 61-yard score on fourth down. Avent hit three passes in the final series. He went to Waters for 15 and 16 yards then Dunbar for 33. Avent finished the drive with a three-run scoring run.
