Baseball Splits Double Header on Senior Day
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba Indians hosted Lincoln Memorial for a South Atlantic Conference baseball double header on Saturday in Newman Park. Catawba split the double header dropping game one 8-9 in 10 innings and winning game two 13-12. The Indians improve to 24-20 on the season and 17-7 in the SAC. Lincoln Memorial is now 27-18 overall and 12-12 in the conference.
The eight 2018 seniors, along with Caleb Stewart who came to Catawba as a 2014 draft pick through Team Impact, were recognized as they played their last home SAC series. Catawba also had an alumni recognition between games. Former players from classes dating back to the class of 1964 were present for the ceremony.
led the offense for Catawba in game one with three hits and two RBI. Jason Curtis recorded two hits with two RBI, while Luke Setzer
and Jacob Nester
each added two hits.
Catawba plated three runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take an immediate 3-0 lead. The Indians added runs in the third and fourth innings to increase their advantage to five.
Lincoln Memorial scored three runs in the fifth to cut into Catawba’s lead. The Indians earned a run back to have a 6-3 edge going into the seventh inning. A two-run homer and a solo homer for the Railsplitters tied the game in the top of the ninth.
Catawba had a runner at third with just one out. Two intentional walks loaded the bases but the Indians were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the game into extra innings.
Lincoln Memorial scored three on a homer to center field in the top half of the tenth inning. Curtis hit the only home run for the Indians in the bottom half scoring two runs; however, Catawba came up a run short.

and Mitchem recorded two hits and two RBI each for the Indians.
The Railsplitters scored two runs in the first to begin game two. The Indians answered with three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead going into the second inning.
Catawba tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the second on doubles by Mitchem and Raper. Lincoln Memorial hit three consecutive homers to cut Catawba’s lead to one in the third.
The Indians scored a run on a two out single in the bottom half of the third inning. The Railsplitters plated four runs in the fourth to take a 9-7 lead.
Raper hit a three run home run to left center in the bottom of the fourth to regain a one run edge for the Indians. Catawba tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to three.
Lincoln Memorial scored three runs to tie the game at 12 in the top of the seventh. A Raper two-out double scored Smith for the Indians win.
Catawba returns to Newman Park for a non-conference midweek game against Barton on Tuesday at 6 pm.
