Men's Soccer Nets First Win at USC Aiken
AIKEN, S.C. -- An offensive outburst propelled the Catawba Indians to a 3-0 victory over USC Aiken Saturday night at the Pacer Pit. Catawba improved to 1-2 on the season with goals by Andrew Twamley, Carson Talboys and Tom Singhgolden in the opening 25 minutes of the match. The trio netted their first goals of the campaign.
The Pacers (2-1) were unable to get the ball past the Indians’ freshman goalkeeper Gianluca Tommasi, who made three saves and recorded his first-career win and clean sheet.
Twamley opened the scoring when he headed a Joe English throw-in past USC Aiken’s keeper, Kenneth Kalek, 11 minutes into the game. In the 25th-minute, Talboys beat a lunging Kalek, finishing off a pass from Jeff Rafter, doubling Catawba’s lead.
Kalek was replaced in goal two-minutes later but it did not slow down the attack. Hunter Faust and Borja Gaspar pushed the pace and the ball up the left side before a cross to the middle found Singhgolden, who made the score 3-0 in the 34th-minute.
Catawba held a 6-2 advantage in shots at the half. The teams tallied five shots each in the final stanza, but neither team was able to add a tally.
The men host Newberry in the conference opener for both squads Thursday at the Frock Soccer Complex. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
