Late Score Secure's Albany's Football Win Over Catawba
SALISBURY, N.C -- Tracey Scott ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns, including the clinching score with 2:14 remaining as visiting Albany State topped Catawba 35-21 in football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Golden Rams up their record to 3-3, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-4.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw Albany lead 27-21, the teams played to a stalemate in the final half until Scott’s two-yard plunge in the closing minutes. The run capped an 11-play, 63-yard drive that took seven minutes off the clock.
Albany grabbed the early lead when Kelias Williams tossed a 17-yard scoring pass to Chris Hunt. The Indians answered that drive and took a 7-6 lead after Kenyatta Greene capped a 10-play drive with a one-yard run. One play later the Golden Rams were back on top as Scott raced 75 yards for a 13-7 edge.
Catawba went ahead at 14-13 when Ken Avent connected with Devonte Tanksley on a 38-yard pass. Albany would take advantage of a Catawba fumble and went up 20-14 on McKinley Haversham’s two-yard run.
The Golden Rams held Catawba on downs on the next series and cashed in with a 42-yard pass from Williams to Mike Green. Catawba scored late in the half to make it 27-21. Greene caught a 13-yard pass from Avent with 1:43 left before the brake.
Scott led Albany’s 385-yard rushing attack. Habersham added another 103 yards. Williams went 5-of-10 through the air for 115 yards and his two scores. Green had three catches for 90 yards.
Avent, making his first career start, threw for 239 yards and two scores. He completed 19 of 32 passes and was intercepted once which came in the final minute. Greene had seven receptions for 73 yards and ran for another 52. Avent totaled 56 yards on the ground.
Omar Staley recorded a pair of sacks and forced a fumble for Catawba on defense. Mike Miller had an interception to go with nine tackles.
Catawba travels to Wingate next Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff with the Bulldogs.
