Indians Shutout Bears 3-0
SALISBURY, N.C. -
Freshman midfielder Michael Nuguse
served up two assists in Catawba's 3-0 victory over Shaw at Frock Field Saturday evening.
The Charlotte native helped the Indians (2-8-0) put an end to a six-match losing streak, assisting on Quinn Bryan's goal in the 54th minute and Borja Gaspar
's marker in 20 minutes later.
Shaw fell to 3-6-1 in the Bears second season as a program.
After a foul by the Bears' in their defensive third, Keenan Tuck
gave the Indians a 1-0 lead at the 17:50 mark. He smashed a low liner around the wall and into the bottom left corner of the net.
Bryan and Nuguse connected eight minutes into the second half, doubling Catawba's lead to 2-0.
Nuguse drove down the left side and worked along the baseline on the far side, before chipping a pass towards the middle of the box for Bryan, who buried it in the back of the net.
At 73:22, Nuguse made a similar run and danced around two defenders before finding an open Gapar, who redirected the ball past the keeper and inside the far post.
Catawba went nearly a month without a win, which was a 3-0 shutout of USC Aiken Sept. 6.
Inside the numbers:
- The 15 shots and three goals matches season highs for the Indians.
- Catawba held Shaw to 10 shots, which is the third fewest by and opponent this season.
- The Indians outshot the Bears 15-10.
- Gianluca Tommasi
played all 90 minutes in goal for the Indians, recording his second shutout of the campaign.
- Gasper led Catawba with four shots, while Tuck and Singhgolden added three each. Ben Bielby
and Nuguse registered two a piece and Bryan took one.
The men take a week off from competition, when they wrap-up the three-game home stand with a match against Coker at 5 p.m.
