Football Gets Approval to Play UNC Pembroke Game on Nov. 17

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College Director of Athletics, Larry Leckonby, has announced that Catawba and UNC Pembroke will be allowed to make up the lost football game due to Hurricane Florence after the previously scheduled end of the season. The teams will meet at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field on Saturday, November 17 with kickoff set for 1:05 p.m.
The schools had to apply for a waiver to the NCAA, which was granted on Monday, to get the game approved. Division II rules state that teams that do not make the playoffs must end team activities once playoff pairings are announced. The waiver allows the teams to play on November 17 since neither are in the running to qualify for the playoffs, which will also start on the 17th.
It will mark the first time, outside of playoff games and bowl games, that Catawba will not face Lenoir-Rhyne in its final game of the season since 1945. Lenoir-Rhyne did not field a team that season due to World War II and Catawba topped Guilford 33-0 to end that year. In 1936, Catawba faced Elon to end the season the week after playing Lenoir-Rhyne. Catawba fell 33-13 in that contest.
