Men's Lacrosse Falls to Belmont Abbey in Season Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey, ranked 10th in NCAA II, rallied to grab a 17-13 win over host Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians drop their opener.
Catawba ended the third quarter on a 6-1 run and took its first lead at 10-9 on Joey Monfort’s goal with just 39 seconds left in the frame. The Indians went up 11-10 as Cole Fanzo cashed in on a man-up chance to start the fourth when the Crusaders were flagged for an illegal stick.
The Crusaders allowed just one goal during that three-minute penalty then erupted after it expired with three goals in a minute to reclaim the lead at 12-11 with 11:04 to go. Belmont Abbey went on to score four more goals, two with a man-up, to lead 16-11 at the 7:47 mark.
Belmont Abbey scored the game’s first four goals, but Catawba answered to tie the game by the end of the opening quarter. The Crusaders tallied all three goals in the second to pull ahead 7-4 at the break.
Four players, Noah Hass, Liam Osborne, Collin Grippo and Austin Hasen, scored three goals for Belmont Abbey. Hass and Osborne had two assists. Bryce Gifford stopped 13 shots and Dylan Harmon went 12-of-16 on face-offs.
Catawba returns to action on Friday, hosting Mount Olive at 4 pm.
