Huggins' Five Hits and Five RBI Help Softball to Sweep of UNCP
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba swept visiting UNC Pembroke in a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians took wins of 7-4 and 9-0 in improving to 4-2 on the year. The Braves fall to 4-4.
Summer Howerton broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth of the opener as she drove home a run with a bases-loaded ground out. Leah Huggins followed with a RBI single and Sydney Goertzen came home on a wild pitch to put Catawba up 7-4. Madison Hunter (1-1) pitched around a pair of walks in the seventh to hold the lead and take the win.
Catawba rallied from a 2-0 first-inning deficit, scoring single runs in the second and third to tie the game. Sierrah McCarthy and Jordan Dean singled home the runs. The Lady Indians used an error to go up 4-2 in the fourth, but UNCP tied the game in the fifth on a two-run homer by Cameron Davis.
Leah Huggins had three hits with two RBI in the win. McCarthy was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Hunter tossed three scoreless innings of relief to get the win. She surrendered just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Rendi Wetherington had three hits for the Braves and led off the game with a home run. Davis had two his and three RBI. Jordan Hall (2-1) allowed seven runs with three strikeouts over five and a third innings for UNCP.
Catawba used two big innings to run-rule the Braves in game two. The Lady Indians plated five runs in the second, capped by a two-run single from Huggins. She would double home a run in a four-run fourth that saw Dean connect on a two-run homer. It was one of her three hits.
Brooke Walser (2-1) went the full five innings in posting the shutout. She allowed just three hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Malerie Leviner (2-2) suffered the loss for UNCP, allowing five run in her two innings.
Catawba is back at home on Sunday, hosting Virginia State for a 1 pm doubleheader.
