Baseball Slugs Its Way Past Lander
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba scored seven times after the fifth inning to rally for a 14-11 victory over visiting Lander in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. The third-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 34-9, while the Bearcats fall to 15-25.
Down, 3-1, Lander scored five runs in the third inning to start a back-and-forth free-scoring affair. The Indians tied it in the bottom of the third, but found itself behind 10-7 going to the bottom of the sixth. Hunter Shepherd’s two-out, three-run homer in the sixth tied it then Robbie Cowie followed a RBI single by Jeremy Simpson with a two-run homer in the seventh as Catawba went on top for good.
Peyton Williams, the seventh of eight Catawba hurlers, grabbed the win. He pitched scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings and improved to 3-1. Riley Myers closed it out. He allowed a walk, double and single to start the ninth, but came back to strikeout the next three batters.
Lander used nine pitchers in the three hour, 41 minute contest. Bryce Jackson took the loss and fell to 0-2.
Roury Glanton homered and had four RBI for Lander. Colton Yeager and Josh Gregory each had two hits and two RBI.
Poteat’s two-run double put Catawba on top 2-0 after an inning and it was 3-1 after two following Morrison’s homer. Lander got a two-run homer by Kyle Jenkins and three-run shot by Glanton to go up 6-3 in the third. Poteat added another two-run double in the third as Catawba tied the game.
Gregory had a two-run homer in the fourth and Yeager a two-run double in the sixth to put Lander back on top. Catawba then rallied behind the homers by Shepherd and Cowie.
Catawba will wrap up its league schedule this weekend on the road at league-leading Newberry. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
