Women's Lacrosse Rallies Late to Top Young Harris
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied back from a six-goal deficit in the final 18 minutes to top visiting Young Harris 19-16 in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-8, while the Mountain Lions drop to 8-6.
Young Harris scored three straight goal to lead 14-8 with 19:36 remaining. Catawba began its comeback when Gianna Pezzulo scored with 17:43 remaining. Nicole Hunt scored twice then Brooklyn Tilley made it four in a row for the Lady Indians with 13:50 to go, making it 14-12.
Hayley Bartlett stopped the run with her seventh goal of the game for the Mountain Lions, but Catawba ran off six straight to take the lead.
Erin Green converted a free-position shot at the 9:04 mark then Catawba scored twice playing down a player to get within a goal. The Lady Indians tied the game on a tally by Jillian Kurolvech with 7:40 left and took the lead behind a Hunt goal at the 6:09 mark.
Tilley added two more goals as Catawba pushed ahead 18-5 with 2:36 to go. Young Harris scored with 1:43 left, but Pezzulo added a final tally with 51 seconds remaining.
Pezzulo scored three goals and added five assists to lead Catawba. Tilley had four goals and helped on one. Hunt also had four goals, while Green posted three goals and two assists. Aryn Dorr stopped 13 shots in goal, including nine in the second half.
Bartlett finished with seven goals and four assists for Young Harris. Erika Cross tallied a pair of goals with four assists. Rachel Robb had a dozen saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
Catawba travels to Chowan on Monday for a 3 p.m. contest.
