Late TD Spoils Football's Second-Half Comeback
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mario Anderson’s four-yard run with 11 second to play spoiled a second-half Catawba rally and gave visiting Newberry a 28-21 win in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Wolves improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. It was the first game of the year for the Catawba Indians.
Newberry built a 21-0 halftime lead, but Catawba roared back in the second half to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
On the first Indian possession of the second half, Ken Avent hit on two first-down passes then raced 43 yards to put Catawba’s first points on the board. Late in the third quarter, Denoris Wardlow intercepted a Newberry pass and set the Indians up at the Wolves’ 37. Avent capped the drive with a one-yard score with 12:23 remaining in the game.
Catawba’s defense came up with two sacks on the next Newberry possession and it took just one play after a punt for the Indians to tie the score. Avent picked up his third rushing touchdown of the game as he raced 50 yards to pull the Indians even with 9:45 left.
Catawba had a possession to take the lead, but the drive stalled at its own 42. Newberry took over for its final drive at its won 10 with 3:13 remaining. Anderson had an early 21-yard run and Dre Harris completed a 49-yard pass to Andre Banks to the Catawba 21.
Anderson toted the ball to the Catawba four where he scored from two plays later. Catawba got a 40-yard kickoff return from Kujuan Pryor to give the Indians one final play, but Avent’s pass was broken up.
Avent ran for 112 yards and the three scores for Catawba. He would complete 12-of-21 passes for 121 yards. Pryor led the receivers with six grabs for 68 yards. On defense, Jordan Gregg made 14 tackles and broke up two passes, one which led to Wardlow’s interception. Robert Cherry had a sack and another tackle for a loss.
Anderson totaled 111 yards on the ground for Newberry. Harris ran for 44 yards and a score and threw for 190 yards and another score. He completed 14-of-20 passes.
Catawba travels to Wingate for its game next Saturday.
