Offense Stymied in Loss at Wingate


WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate held visiting Catawba to 126 total yards in posting a 33-6 win in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Belk Stadium. The Bulldogs go to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians are 0-2 and 0-2.

The only points of the opening quarter came on a Wingate safety when Catawba quarterback Ken Avent was called for intentional grounding in the end zone. The Bulldogs scored on a pair of short touchdown runs and got a 40-yard field goal from McLean Robertson in the second quarter to grab a 19-0 lead at the half.

Catawba would finally get on the board in the final quarter. Avent capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 19-yard pass to Kujuan Pryor.

Avent completed 9-of-26 passes on the day for 111 yards. He was intercepted twice to go his one touchdown strike. The Indians were limited to 15 yards rushing, with Avent netting eight and Nasjzae Bryant seven. Devonte Tanksley had four catches for 56 yards. Pryor’s two catches went for 38 yards.

On defense, Robert Cherry recorded nine tackles, was in for one for a loss and forced a fumble. Izaiah Taylor also forced a fumble and Joshua Pixley had an interception.

Shaw Croaker threw for 227 yards on 16-of-30 passing for Wingate. The Bulldogs ran for 209 yards with Alex Wilson leading the way with 58. Kamal Desor had four receptions for 59 yards.

Catawba hosts Barton next Saturday with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
