Martin Runs for Two Scores in 28-6 Win Over WSSU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba held visiting Winston-Salem State to 237 total yards in posting a 28-6 win in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 2-0 on the year. The Rams go to 0-1.
Jyrea Martin ran for two scores, while Ken Avent was an efficient 10-for-12 through the air for 117 yards and a score. Daniel Parker led Catawba’s ground game with 68 yards with Kujuan Pryor catching six passes for 57 yards and a score.
The Indians scored on its first two drives of the game. The initial drive covered 78 yards on 10 plays and culminated with Martin scoring from three-yards out. The second drive was more of the same as Catawba marched 77 yards in 11 plays with Martin going in from the four.
The Rams cashed in on a pair of field goals in the opening half. Jobanni Esparza converted from 38 yards in the final minute of the first quarter and added a 35-yarder with 22 seconds left in the first half.
After fumbling inside the 10 on an early third-quarter drive, Catawba came back to tack on a score late in the frame. Avent tossed a 10-yard pass to Pryor for the score after a Parker set up the score with a 37-yard run. Mike Jones iced the game when he picked off a WSSU pass and rambled 77 yards for a score and a 28-6 edge early in the fourth quarter.
Cameron Lewis led the Ram offence. He ran for 47 yards and completed 8-of-18 passes for 76 yards. Antjuan Collins made six catches for 79 yards.
Catawba is back at home next Saturday, hosting Barton at 1 p.m.
