WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GOES COLD IN FINAL MINUTES IN LOSS TO WINGATE
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate used a 10-0 run over the final three minutes to take a 76-69 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-7 and 0-2.
Anna Atkinson (Marion, NC) notched team-high totals of 21 points, nine assists and five steals to lead the Bulldogs, while Kasey Gillis (Indian Trail, NC) added 16 points. Erica Crumlin (Irmo, SC) contributed 10 points, seven blocks and five rebounds.
For Catawba, Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo HS) had 15 points with NeKeithia Howard (Macon, GA/Northeast HS) contributing 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sara Crane (Keystone Heights, FL/Keystone Heights HS) chipped in with a career-high 10 points off the Catawba bench.
A Howard jumper put Catawba up 69-66 with 3:23 to play in the contest, but that would be the final points for the Lady Indians. A Crumlin hoop cut the Bulldog deficit to 69-68 at the 2:59 plateau and Brittany West (Valdese, NC) put Wingate on top with a jumper with 2:16 remaining.
The Bulldogs put the contest on ice by hitting six-of-eight free throws during the final 1:08 of the game. Five players scored points during Wingate’s crucial 10-0 game-ending run. Free throws were the difference, as Wingate converted 84.6 percent of its charity tosses (22-of-26).
Catawba led 63-55 with eight minutes remaining, thanks to two free throws from Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS). Following the Whitley free throws, Wingate ended the game on a 21-6 run. The Indians made only three field goals in the final 9:34, two of those three baskets belonged to Howard.
The Indians led 38-37 at halftime, thanks to eight first-half points by Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS). Catawba hit 48.4 percent of its first-half field goals (15-of-31). The Indians could manage only 36.1 percent shooting (13-of-36) in the second half. Wingate hit 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the floor Wednesday night.
Catawba won the battle of the boards 41-38, thanks to seven rebounds each from Howard and Corin Muldrow (Jacksonville, NC/Soutwest HS). Wingate’s Stacie Rhodes (Raleigh, NC) and Kate Edwards (Laurinburg, NC) topped the Bulldog charts with six rebounds each.Related Item: Box Score
