HARTSVILLE, SC -- Catawba scored its most goal in nearly two seasons in grabbing a 4-0 shutout of host Coker in women's soccer action on Thursday night at the Coker Soccer Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-2, while the Cobras fall to 0-3.
Freshman Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams HS) put the Lady Indians on top with a first half goal then Catawba added three more in the final half to pull away. Fellow freshman Alex Hulsey (San Diego, CA/Parker HS) assisted on the opening tally which proved to be the game-winner.
Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) and Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA/St. Francis HS/Tenn-Martin) scored just a minute apart in the second half to help secure the win with just over 20 minutes remaining. Karen Presnell (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) capped the scoring on an assist from Ana Toole. Kirkman had an assist on the Conte goal, while Emily Auwarter (Shamong, NJ/Seneca HS) had a helper on the tally by Iwanicki.
Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) combined with Erin Palma (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville HS/New England College) to notch the shutout. Pawlowski had the lone Catawba save as the Lady Indians dominated with a 29-5 edge in shots. Lizz Morris stopped 12 of the Catawba shots with Haley Gibson denying three.
Catawba plays its first home match of the season on Saturday at noon against Barton.
