CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba ran its win streak to three matches with a 2-1 victory over host Queens in women's soccer action on Thursday night at Diehl Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-2, while the Royals fall to 2-4.
Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) got the Lady Indians off to a quick start with a goal in the 5th minute on a tally assisted by Karen Presnell (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS). Despite allowing five first-half corner kicks to Queens, Catawba gave up just three shots to take the one-goal edge into the half.
Queens struck early in the second half to tie the score. Diamond Russos scored off an assist from Mary Stringint in the 52nd minute to pull the Royals level. Catawba would get the winning goal in the 65th minute as Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA/St. Francis HS/Tenn-Martin) drilled in the winner. It marked her third straight match with a goal for the Lady Indians.
Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) turned away a chance by Queens with just over 15 minutes remaining, one of her three saves on the night, to keep Catawba in front. Catawba will return home on Saturday to face Anderson in its league opener at noon.
