SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Anderson played to an exciting 4-4 draw in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians fought back four times from a goal deficit to move their record to 3-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC. The Trojans stand 0-4-2 and 0-0-1.
Anderson never led for more then seven minutes in the match as Catawba was able to answer each Trojan tally. Martin Brain curled in a nice shot to the upper corner to start the scoring in the 22nd minute for Anderson. Four minutes later Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, IRELAND/Presentation) sent a long ball to Ezra Ntirugelegwa (Durham, NC/Jordan HS), who fed a pass across the box that Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) converted to even the match.
The teams were still tied a 1-1 until just past the hour when the offenses ignited. Eduardo Cabastani knocked home a corner kick from Ben Jones at the 62:12 mark to put Anderson up 2-1. In the 70th minute, Smith crossed a ball to the back post that Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) fired in to pull the Indians even once more.
Four minutes later it was Felix Helgesson scoring for Anderson after taking a pass from Zak Moss. Catawba wasted little time in pulling that goal back. Smith again sent in a ball, this time to Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS), who rammed home a shot just 27 seconds after Helgesson scored.
With just three minutes remaining, Cabastani rocketed a shot that Catawba keeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) tipped up, but it glanced off the crossbar to Lars Zimmerman who scored to put the Trojans up 4-3. This time, Catawba needed only 27 seconds to equalize. Bonilla's corner kick found the head of Faughnan, who notched his second of the match to pull the Indians level one last time.
Anderson out-shot Catawba 17-10, but Harvey made eight saves. Lukas Hesse made four saves in goal for the Trojans. Catawba plays at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at 7 pm, then returns home to Frock Field next Saturday to face Newberry at 2:30 pm.
