FAUGHNAN STRIKES EARLY IN OT AS MAGIC CONTINUES FOR MEN'S SOCCER
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba junior Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville, NC) delivered a strike two minutes into overtime to lift the visitors to a 2-1 win over Queens in men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Diehl Park. The victory improves the Catawba Indians to 6-2-3, while the Royals fall to 5-5. Catawba went on top in the 18th minute when Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) tallied on an assist from Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS). The score stayed that way until late in the match when Queens got the equalizer. Thiago Andrade scored with just four and half minutes remaining to send the match to extra time. Playing extra minutes is not new to Catawba, who went to overtime for the fifth time in the last six matches. The Indians wasted little time as Faughnan drilled home the game-winner after his initial shot was blocked. The Indians held a 16-11 edge in shots and doubled up the Royals on attempts on goal at 8-4. Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) stopped three of those shots in goal for the Indians. Montrell Morgan made six saves for Queens. Catawba, now 5-0-3 in its last eight matches, returns to SAC play this weekend when the Indians travel to Carson-Newman on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. match.
