ANDERSON, SC -- Catawba fell in five sets to host Anderson in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at the Abney Center despite a career-high 24 kills from freshman Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS). The Trojans won the match 25-12, 18-25, 22-25, 27-25 and 16-14 to improve to 9-8 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 6-7 and 3-2.
Catawba had match points at the end of the fourth and fifth sets, but could not put the Trojans away. In the fifth set, a kill by Gallup and a Trojan error had the Lady Indians up 14-11. Anderson responded with the next five points, two on kills from Hailey Pittman and the final point on a kill from Shannon Gillespie.
Gallup had Catawba ahead 25-24 in set four, but again the Trojans fought off the match point and pulled out the set on a error by Catawba. The Lady Indians had battled back to lead two sets to one after a dismal first set that saw them hit at a negative six and half percent. Catawba hit only 13% for the match with Gallup and Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) accounting for 47 of the 63 kills.
Whitmer followed Gallup with 23 kills and had 20 digs. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) pilled up 51 digs, just four shy of her school mark set last season. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 45 assists and recorded 22 digs.
Pittman led Anderson with 18 kills and hit at 47% for the match, making just one hitting error. Gillespie followed with 15 kills and 23 digs. Tiffany Rowe collected nine kills and six blocks.
Catawba will stay on the road Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. match.
