SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba clinched a spot in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Brevard on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-6-3 overall and finish 3-3-3 in the SAC. The Tornados end their season at 2-12-2 and 2-7. Catawba will travel to Lincoln Memorial in the first round of the SAC Tournament on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Indians will be seeded sixth and fell to LMU 2-0 in the regular season.
Catawba keeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) collected his second straight shutout, making three saves. Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) put Catawba on top in the 17th minute on senior night. Fellow seniors Eoin Duffy (Knocknacarra, IRELAND/Galway U.) and Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) assisted on the tally. Duffy freed Smith, who send a cross through the goal mouth that Nava back-heeled into the net.
Smith added a cushion on his blast from the top of the box just past the hour. Cross back towards the box, Smith sent a shot just under the bar in the 63rd minute. Harvey made one stellar save to keep the Indians up by two goals just minutes after Smith's tally and went on to keep the clean sheet.
Catawba held a 13-10 edge in shots with a 5-3 advantage on goal. Catawba earned six corners to two for the Tornados. Jack Shaw made three saves in goal for Brevard.
