VIDEO: Coach Graham Discusses 2012 Season and 2013 Outlook
Betsy Graham enters tenth season as head coach of the Catawba College swimming program. She launched the men's program in 2006. She came to Catawba from the University of Arkansas, where she served as an assistant from 1996 until coming to Catawba.
Last season, the Catawba women were sixth and the men eighth at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Meet and produced a pair of all-conference swimmers. At the NCAA II National Meet, the men earned a 29th place finish behind Patrik Drakes, who earned honorable mention All-America honors. Under Graham, Catawba has produced three All-Americans and five All-Academic team members. Graham also coaches US National Paralympian, Ashley Owens a Catawba sophomore, who claimed four medals at the 2010 World Championships. Prior to her stint at Arkansas, Graham served as the head coach of the Aqua-Tex Swim Team (ATEX) in Houston, TX. As head coach of the ATEC squad, Graham enjoyed many highlight including a swimming finalist at the 1996 Olympic trials. She also coached two Olympic Festival medalists as well as junior and senior national champions. Graham also coached a 1994 and 1996 male academic All-American and placed a swimmer on the national junior team. She owns a Level Five certification.
Before her stint at Arkansas, Graham had previously been an assistant at Ferris State and Northern Michigan Universities. She concluded her studies at Northern Michigan, earning a bachelor of science degree in recreation in 1989.
Graham, who was born in Richmond, VA, attended high school in Kingsville, TX, where she was an All-American in 1983-84. She was a two-time team captain at the University of Wyoming in 1987-88 and a NCAA Nationals qualifier in 1986 while swimming at Texas Tech. Graham was a senior national qualifier from 1984-86. Graham resides in Salisbury with her daughter, Rilee Elizabeth (5).
